My poster for Leigh-on-Sea features this traditional fishing town in Essex as seen from the Thames Estuary. Leigh is famous for its cockles, and you will find the Estuary at Leigh, full of fishing trawlers bussing about on the water. In my poster leading up from the river you will see the ‘Old Town’ with its traditional cobbled streets and British pubs, and on top of the hill, St Clements Church standing tall over the town. Leigh is where I grew up, and so I no wonder why It is the first of my local posters, and has lead onto other designs for the surrounding areas such as Chalkwell and Southend.

This is my poster design celebrating Hadleigh Castle Country Park hosting the London 2012 Olympic mountain biking. I have enjoyed many long bike rides, around the old castle ruins and, through the country park. A highlight for me on the local calendar, especially as a child growing up by the Thames Estuary, is the annual Southend Airshow. So what could be better to feature on my Southend-on-Sea poster than the Red Arrows? The Red Arrows are the aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force, and  here they are, putting on a show for the crowds. The poster also features the Southend skyline, in my printed blocky style, along with the iconic Southend pier.

A visit to the Old Town of Leigh-on-Sea is a popular day out for many a folk wanting to taste the seafood delights of the Thames and take in the traditional seaside atmosphere. Leigh is famous for its cockles and, along the water’s edge are, the famous cockle sheds.

Westcliff-on-Sea is a suburb of Southend-on-Sea situated on the north bank of the Thames Estuary. My poster features the famous ‘Rossi Ice Cream’. Rossi is a company making ice cream in the Southend area since 1932 and it is famous for its delicious lemon sorbet. In the top left of the poster, on top of the cliff gardens, is the Cliffs Pavilion theatre showcasing national and international talent since the 60’s.

This is my poster for Chalkwell beach on the Thames Estuary, Essex. You’ll find the beach at Chalkwell a hub of activity with many tourists or locals alike soaking up the seaside atmosphere. One of the striking landmarks on the beach is the Crowstone. It stands on the beach as a marker for the limit of the Port of London Authority's jurisdiction. I wanted to use the Crowstone as the focal point in my poster. I also wanted to include the salt water pool (which I’ve enjoyed many times as a child) and of course the Grain power station chimney across the Thames (an unmistakable landmark on the south banks of the Estuary).

The Southend Pier Railway is a narrow gauge railway in the English seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea. It runs the 1.34 miles length of Southend Pier, providing public passenger transport from the shore to the pier head. On a clear day you can hear the unmistakable rattle of the train rolling along the world’s longest pleasure pier.

Thorpe Bay, a little further down the Thames Estuary from the neon lights of Southend, is a mainly 1920's residential suburb. The Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club and the Thorpe Bay Yacht Club are located on the sea front on Thorpe Esplanade. Thorpe bay has fantastic beaches lined with Rows of brightly coloured beach huts.

The Labworth Café is a pioneering modernist International style reinforced concrete building overlooking the Thames estuary at Labworth beach on Canvey Island, Essex. Built in 1932–1933 by Ove Arup, it exists as the only building solely designed by the distinguished engineer.

For those not acquainted with this very unusual town, it's just a stones-throw along from neighbouring Aldeburgh, and it's probably my favourite Suffolk location.

I have very fond memories, when I was young, taking a trip to Aldburgh and Thorpeness and having an amazing time on the famous boating lake 'The Meare'. Hiring one of the many colourful rowing boat allows you to explore the many islands and secret waterways the Meare has for you to discover.

Towering ubove the trees and rooftops is the captivating 'House in the Clouds'. This unmistakable landmark was converted from a water tower to a very unusual house, and is one special building I couldn't wait to capture in a poster.

The Thames sailing barge is a type of commercial sailing boat once common on the River Thames in London. The flat-bottomed barges with a shallow draught and leeboards, were perfectly adapted to the Thames Estuary, with its shallow waters and narrow tributary rivers. The larger barges were seaworthy vessels, and were the largest sailing vessel to be handled by just two men.

I obviously wanted sailing to feature prominently in my design, along with the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club designed in 1931, and of course, the historic waterfront. You can also see the Burnham Clock Tower in the skyline.

I try to use childhood memories when designing my posters and when I think of Shoeburyness my strongest memories are of trips to East Beach with my family and flying kites on the common. However, the Shoeburry Garrison is such an important and fascinating part of Southend heritage, I couldn’t not include it in my local poster collection, which is why I have chosen the Garrison Clock Tower as subject for my Shoeburyness poster.

Shoeburyness was first used by the military in 1848, when the British School of Gunnery was opened, and plays an important part in British military history to this day.

Many of the old Garrisons buildings are now residential and new local developments are bringing the whole area back to life. New open spaces, views, focal points and parkland are being created for the public along with new access to beaches and seawall. I wanted to reflect the community atmosphere in the poster by including ‘everyday’ people busing about their day.

The final missing piece to my Southend Estuary stretch from Leigh-on-Sea to Shoeburyness - Southchurch!   This is my 23rd Fendell Poster and it features the beautiful Southchurch Park and the model boating lake.

Shoeburyness Poster Details

Model boating in Southchurch Park is a pastime that is traceable back to the 1920's. In 1948 seven gentlemen from the Southend Model Yacht and Railway club formed the Southend Model Power Boat club.

During these early years models were either straight running, or tethered.  Tethered craft ran around a central anchor fixed in the centre of the lake, typically at high speed, until it's fuel was expended.  Straight running craft were launched from one side of the lake and aimed, across the lake, at a number of marked posts forming a gate.  Scores were accumulated according to accuracy of passing through the gate.  One or more catchers would be positioned at the far side of the lake and would receive the craft, and return it.

Model boating in Southchurch Park continues to this day, and in 2018 the Southend Model Power Boat club celebrates 70 years of model boating with it's platinum jubilee.

Due to popular demand, I am pleased I can now add Benfleet to my local poster portfolio. Benfleet is a town in the Castle Point district of Essex.

The Battle of Benfleet took place here between the Vikings and Saxons in 894.

At the base of the poster, I have referenced some of the local pubs such as The Hoy and Helmet also, the iconic Church of St Mary the Virgin which dates to around the 12th century and even predates the neighboring Hadleigh Castle. You can also see the railway station that was brought to the town in 1855. Benfleet railway station connects the town with Southend and London Fenchurch Street.

As you work your way up the poster and follow Essex Way as it zig-zags up Benfleet Hill, you will find Benfleet Water Tower amongst some of the large houses on Benfleet Road.

My 2019 Christmas poster features one of Southends most iconic buildings, the Kursaal. The Kursaal is a Grade II listed building in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, which opened in 1901 as part of one of the world's first purpose-built amusement parks.

I wanted to create a special piece combining all posters along the Southend stretch of the Estuary from Leigh-on-Sea to Shoeburyness. I also wanted a way to link all the posters geographically to the Thames Estuary and to each other so I have merged them with a map of the sea front.
